Training the Next Generation of Nurses

Liverpool John Moores University set out to refurbish and extend its Nursing and Allied Health care facilities at Tithebarn Street, in the heart of Liverpool's city-centre campus, alongside a refurbishment of the adjoining Avril Robarts Library. The combined programme was valued at £21 million.

Teaching facilities of this kind are electrically demanding. Clinical simulation suites, lecture theatres, IT-heavy learning spaces, libraries and student services all carry different lighting, power and data requirements — and all of them have to meet the life-safety standards expected of a public building occupied by thousands of students.

Works started in 2019, ran straight through the Covid-19 pandemic, and completed in August 2021. Very few construction programmes of this size survived that period intact.

MARA Electrical were appointed by Willmott Dixon and Kimpton to deliver the entire electrical services package, valued at £3 million. It remains one of the largest single electrical contracts we have completed.

Nine Electrical Disciplines, One Package

From the incoming distribution boards to the access control on the doors.

Main Distribution

New main distribution throughout the building, forming the electrical backbone for every system that followed.

Lighting

Complete lighting installation across teaching spaces, lecture theatres, library, circulation and student areas.

Networked Emergency Lighting

Addressable, networked emergency lighting with central monitoring — self-testing rather than manual inspection, as a building of this scale requires.

Small Power

Small power throughout, designed around clinical simulation equipment, IT-dense study areas and flexible teaching layouts.

Structured Cabling

Full structured cabling infrastructure supporting campus IT, AV and networked building systems.

Fire Alarm

Fire alarm installation to suit a large, multi-occupancy public education building.

HVAC Wiring

Power and control wiring to heating, ventilation and air conditioning plant, coordinated with the mechanical package.

CCTV & Access Control

Security systems including CCTV and access control across a campus building open to thousands of students.

Intruder Alarm

Intruder alarm installation completing the security package and integrated with the wider building systems.

The Tithebarn Street Installation

From the LV switchpanel and containment to the finished teaching and student spaces above it.

What LJMU Got

A Complete Package

Nine electrical disciplines delivered by one contractor, coordinated under a single point of responsibility rather than split across specialists.

Life-Safety Compliance

Fire alarm, networked emergency lighting and security systems to the standard a public education building occupied by thousands demands.

Delivered Through Covid

A programme begun in 2019 and completed in August 2021, maintained through the most disrupted period UK construction has faced.

Tier 1 Standards

Delivered to the programme, documentation and site standards expected by Willmott Dixon, one of the UK's largest main contractors.

The Electrical Contractor Behind the Renewables

Most people find MARA through solar panels or EV charging. This project is the foundation underneath both. Designing a 1MVA supply for a 60-bay EV hub, or the electrical infrastructure for a 2.2MWp solar array, draws on exactly the same discipline as a £3m university package: distribution design, life-safety systems, and delivering to a Tier 1 programme.

Liverpool is around 45 minutes from our base in Queensferry on Deeside, along the M53 and through the Wirral — one of our closest major markets, alongside Chester, Flintshire and Wrexham. We have delivered further projects on Merseyside at Central Docks and Phoenix Place.
