The Cheapest Kilowatt Is the One You Don't Use

Solar generation gets the attention, but the fastest route to a lower energy bill is usually reducing demand in the first place. Lighting is where that is most visible in an industrial building — fittings running for every hour the facility is occupied, often for decades on the same technology.

Siemens developed a new lighting scheme for Kingspan, delivered through Lynx LED. Several factors drove the project, but the headline was energy: the existing fittings were 4 × 80W T5 fluorescents — 320W per fitting. The replacements draw 140W.

That is a 56% reduction in connected load on every single fitting — before you count reduced maintenance, better light quality and the end of fluorescent tube replacement.

MARA Electrical was appointed to carry out the lighting replacement works — the physical installation, connection and certification of the new scheme across the facility.

What a 180W Saving Per Fitting Means

Indicative figures per fitting, based on the connected load difference between the outgoing T5 fluorescents and the incoming LEDs.

FittingLoadPer fitting, 4,000 hrs/yr
4 × 80W T5 fluorescent outgoing320W~1,280 kWh
140W LED installed140W~560 kWh
Saving180W (56%)~720 kWh per fitting

Illustrative only, based on 4,000 operating hours per year. Actual savings depend on run hours, fitting count and tariff — we model your real figures at survey stage.

Lighting Replacement Works

A like-for-like fitting replacement across an operational facility sounds simple until you factor in working around production, safe access at height, and disposing of fluorescent tubes correctly. It is a job for electrical contractors, not a lamp-swap crew.

  • Removal of existing T5 fittings — 4 × 80W fluorescent units taken out and disposed of compliantly.
  • Installation of 140W LED fittings — to the scheme developed by Siemens and delivered through Lynx LED.
  • Electrical connection and testing — to BS 7671 18th Edition, with certification issued.
  • Delivered around operations — phased to keep the facility working throughout.

What Kingspan Got

56% Less Lighting Load

Every fitting dropped from 320W to 140W — a permanent reduction in demand that needs no behaviour change to deliver.

Lower Running Costs

Reduced consumption on a load that runs for every occupied hour, with a payback that scales directly with facility run hours.

Less Maintenance

LED fittings end the cycle of fluorescent tube and ballast replacement, cutting both material cost and access time at height.

Supports Net Zero

Demand reduction alongside Kingspan's renewable generation — the two halves of a credible carbon reduction strategy.

Reduce Demand First, Then Generate

We install a great deal of commercial solar — 21MWp and counting. But the honest advice to any business starting an energy project is to look at consumption before generation. Cutting lighting load by 56% means the solar array you eventually install covers a far larger share of what you actually use.

It is also usually cheaper and quicker. There is no G99 application, no roof survey and no DNO timescale — just a phased fitting replacement that starts saving from the day it is energised.

As NICEIC approved electrical contractors based in Queensferry on Deeside, we deliver commercial LED lighting schemes alongside commercial solar panel installation and EV charging infrastructure across Chester, Deeside, Wrexham, Flintshire and the North West — often on the same site visit.
