Kingspan committed to being carbon zero by 2025 — a target that needs renewable generation actually installed, not just planned. MARA Electrical installed and connected 41.85kWp of solar PV on a Kingspan Power Canopy, complete with under-canopy amenity lighting and architectural feature lighting.

Kingspan set itself the goal of becoming carbon zero by 2025. Targets like that are not met with efficiency tweaks alone — they require renewable generation actually installed, commissioned and producing. That is where this project came in.
A Power Canopy is a neat answer to a common commercial problem: not every site has spare roof area suitable for solar PV. A canopy structure creates its own south-facing generating surface while doing something useful underneath — sheltering parking, walkways or plant, and carrying the lighting that space needs.
Working in partnership with Raised Access Floors, MARA Electrical was brought in to install and connect the electrical systems — both the solar PV side and the lighting integrated into the canopy itself.
Solar PV and lighting delivered as one coordinated electrical package.
Installation and connection of the electrical systems for 41.85kWp of solar photovoltaic generation across the Kingspan Power Canopy structure.
Full electrical connection of the PV array — DC and AC side, inverter connection, protection and testing to BS 7671 18th Edition.
Lighting installed beneath the canopy so the sheltered area remains safe and usable through the darker months.
Architectural feature lighting to the side wall of the canopy, turning a functional structure into a visible statement of intent.

Renewable generation and usable amenity space from one piece of infrastructure.
Clean electricity produced on site, contributing directly to Kingspan's carbon zero by 2025 commitment rather than offsetting on paper.
A canopy creates its own generating surface — solar PV on sites where the existing roof is unsuitable, shaded or already committed.
The space beneath the canopy is protected and properly lit, so it stays usable year-round instead of being written off after dark.
PV and lighting installed and connected by the same MCS certified, NICEIC approved team — no split responsibility between trades.
Plenty of commercial sites across Deeside, Chester and Flintshire want solar PV and conclude they cannot have it — the roof is the wrong pitch, the wrong age, already carrying plant, or simply not theirs to modify. A canopy sidesteps all of that.
It also stacks benefits. Car park canopies shelter vehicles and generate; walkway canopies do the same for people. Add the amenity lighting underneath and you have replaced a lighting scheme, added shelter and installed renewable generation in one project rather than three.
From our base in Queensferry on Deeside — a short run along the A548 and A494 from Deeside Industrial Park, Connah's Quay and Chester — we deliver commercial solar panel installation across North Wales and the North West, alongside 21MWp+ of rooftop solar for names including Sainsbury's, Tesco, Primark and the Ministry of Defence.
