Simple Process

How Solar Works

Understanding the solar energy process from sunlight to savings

1. Solar Panels Capture Sunlight

Photovoltaic cells in your solar panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity, even on cloudy days.

2. Inverter Converts Electricity

The inverter transforms DC electricity into alternating current (AC), which is what powers your home appliances.

3. Power Your Home

The converted electricity powers your home, reducing or eliminating your need for grid electricity during daylight hours.

4. Store or Export Excess Energy

Excess electricity can be stored in batteries for later use or exported back to the grid, potentially earning you credits.

Reduce Energy Bills

Lower your monthly electricity costs by generating your own clean energy and reducing grid dependency.

Energy Independence

Protect yourself from rising energy costs and potential power outages with your own energy source.

Increase Property Value

Homes with solar installations typically sell for more and faster than comparable non-solar homes.

Environmental Impact

Reduce your carbon footprint and help combat climate change by using clean, renewable energy.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about solar energy for your home

How much does a solar system cost?

The cost of a solar system depends on several factors including system size, equipment quality, and installation complexity. For a typical UK home, prices range from £4,000-£6,000 for a 3kW system to £10,000-£14,000 for a 7kW system. Battery storage adds approximately £4,000-£7,000. Our calculator provides an estimate based on your specific requirements.

How long do solar panels last?

Modern solar panels typically come with a 25-30 year performance warranty and can continue producing electricity for 30-40 years. Most manufacturers guarantee at least 80% of the original output after 25 years. The inverter typically needs replacement after 10-15 years, while battery storage systems generally last 10-15 years.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

In most cases, solar panel installations in the UK are considered "permitted development" and don't require planning permission. However, there are exceptions for listed buildings, conservation areas, or if the installation would protrude more than 200mm from the roof surface. Our team will handle all necessary permissions and paperwork as part of our service.

Will solar panels work during power cuts?

Standard grid-tied solar systems will shut down during a power cut for safety reasons. However, if you add battery storage with backup functionality, you can continue to power essential appliances during outages. We offer various backup solutions to meet your specific needs and ensure energy security.

What maintenance do solar panels require?

Solar panels require minimal maintenance. Rain typically keeps them clean, but an occasional rinse with water may help in dry, dusty periods. We recommend an annual inspection to ensure optimal performance. Our maintenance packages include monitoring, cleaning, and performance checks to maximize your system's efficiency and lifespan.

Are there any government incentives available?

Yes, the UK offers the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which pays you for excess electricity exported to the grid. VAT on solar installations is currently reduced to 0% for residential properties. Additional local incentives may be available depending on your area. Our team stays up-to-date with all available incentives and will ensure you receive all benefits you're entitled to.
