Self-storage is an unglamorous but genuinely well-suited host for commercial photovoltaics.
Self-storage buildings are essentially large, simple sheds. From a solar perspective that is close to perfect: broad uninterrupted roof planes, very little rooftop plant, and no complex shading to design around.
The load beneath is modest but constant — lighting through the corridors, security systems, access control, climate control in some units, and office space at the front. It runs through the day, which means generation is consumed rather than exported.
We delivered circa 50kWp at each of six sites over four years, working through Kingspan. Spreading a programme across that period demands consistency: the site completed in 2020 had to match the one completed in 2016.
Circa 50kWp per site across six self-storage facilities over four years.
Photovoltaic systems installed across six Lok'nStore facilities between 2016 and 2020.
Each building surveyed, designed and notified separately to its local network operator.
The same specification and standard maintained across a programme spanning four years.
Certification and documentation matched across every site in the programme.

Circa 50kWp at each of six sites, adding meaningful renewable capacity to the portfolio.
Generation offsetting lighting, security and access control load at each facility.
A proven model that can be rolled out to further sites as the estate grows.
MCS and electrical certification produced identically across all six sites.
Self-storage, trade counters, light industrial units and warehousing all share the same helpful characteristics: simple roofs, modest but steady daytime loads, and owners with a direct interest in reducing service charges and running costs.
There is a great deal of that building stock across Deeside Industrial Park, Wrexham Industrial Estate, Broughton and the Chester trade parks. If you own or operate one, the numbers are usually better than people expect.
Whatever your building type, we survey it, design for it and certify it. Talk to us about commercial solar panel installation, or browse the full solar portfolio.
