Solar battery storage explained

What is solar battery storage?

Solar battery storage is a rechargeable battery fitted to your home's electrics that stores spare electricity from your solar panels during the day, then powers your home in the evening and overnight. Without one, most of your midday solar is exported to the grid for a few pence while you buy electricity back at full price after dark.

A home battery does not generate electricity. It moves the power you already generate to the time you actually use it. Paired with a time-of-use tariff, it can also charge overnight at a cheap rate and carry you through the most expensive part of the day.

MARA Electrical is an MCS certified and NICEIC approved installer based in Queensferry, Deeside. We size each battery to how your household really uses electricity, rather than selling a standard package.

How it works

How a home battery works through the day

Solar panels produce most of their power around midday, but most homes use most of their electricity at breakfast and in the evening. A battery bridges that gap.

  1. Daytime

    Panels charge the battery

Your home uses solar power first. Anything left over charges the battery instead of being exported for a low rate.

  2. Evening

    The battery powers your home

When the sun goes down, the battery supplies your lights, cooking and TV, so you buy far less from the grid at peak prices.

  3. Overnight

Top up on a cheap rate

On a time-of-use tariff, the battery can charge from the grid overnight at a low rate, which is especially useful in winter when solar output is lower.

Your options

Which solar battery setup is right for you?

Every home is different, so we start with what you already have and how you use electricity.

Battery with new solar panels

Install panels and a battery together with one hybrid inverter. This is the most cost-effective way to do it, because the electrical work is done once.

Best for: homes planning solar for the first time. See domestic solar panel installation.

Add a battery to existing solar

We retrofit a battery to the solar you already have, whoever installed it, using either an AC-coupled battery or a new hybrid inverter.

Best for: homes exporting lots of solar during the day.

Battery without solar

A standalone battery charges overnight on a cheap off-peak tariff and runs your home through the day and evening. It can work with solar if you add panels later.

Best for: homes on a time-of-use tariff, or without a suitable roof.

Battery with power-cut backup

Most batteries switch off in a power cut. With a backup (EPS) function and separately wired circuits, essentials like lights, the fridge and internet keep running.

Best for: rural homes, home workers and anyone who has frequent outages.

Looking at battery storage for a business site? We design and install commercial solar and storage too. See commercial solar panel installation.

Sizing

What size solar battery do I need?

The right battery size depends on how much electricity you use between late afternoon and the next morning, not on how big your roof is. If most of your usage happens in the evening, you need more storage. If someone is home all day using the solar as it is generated, a smaller battery may be all you need.

At the survey we look at your bills or smart meter data alongside your solar generation, then recommend a battery that fills up on a typical day and empties overnight. Bigger is not always better. A battery that never fully charges is capacity you have paid for and will not use.

  • Sized from your real usage, not a standard package
  • Expandable systems where you might add an EV or heat pump later
  • A clear explanation of the expected saving, with no best-case guesswork

Cost and savings

How much does a solar battery cost?

As a guide, an installed home battery usually costs from around £4,000 for a smaller unit to £8,000 or more for a larger one. Residential batteries currently have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, including batteries added to existing solar.

Are solar batteries worth it? Usually yes if you export a lot of your solar during the day, use most of your electricity in the evening, or can make use of a cheap overnight tariff. They are less worthwhile if you already use most of your solar as it is generated. We will tell you honestly which applies to you.

What affects the price of a solar battery
What affects the priceWhy it matters
Battery capacity (kWh)The biggest factor. More storage costs more.
InverterSome homes need a new hybrid inverter; others can use an AC-coupled battery.
Installing with new solarCheaper than retrofitting later, as the electrical work is done once.
Power-cut backupBackup needs extra wiring to separate the protected circuits.
LocationCable runs and safe siting can add to the installation work.
Installed safely

Safe, certified battery installation

Home batteries store a lot of energy, so where and how they are installed matters. Every MARA battery installation is carried out by our own NICEIC approved electricians.

  • Sited in line with PAS 63100, the safety guidance for home batteries: outside the living space where possible, and never in bedrooms or escape routes
  • Wired, tested and certified to BS 7671, the UK wiring regulations
  • DNO notification handled for you
  • MCS certified installation, keeping your solar eligible for Smart Export Guarantee payments
  • Monitoring app set up and charge times matched to your tariff

Questions

Solar battery storage FAQs

How much does solar battery storage cost?

As a guide, an installed home battery usually costs from around £4,000 for a smaller unit to £8,000 or more for a larger one. The final price depends on the battery capacity, whether you need a new or hybrid inverter, and where the battery can be safely sited. Fitting a battery at the same time as new solar panels is normally cheaper than adding one later. We give you a fixed written price after a free survey.

Is there VAT on solar batteries?

No. Residential battery storage is zero rated for VAT until 31 March 2027. That covers a battery installed with new solar panels, a battery added to existing solar, and a standalone battery with no solar at all, as long as it is installed by a qualified installer.

Are solar batteries worth it in the UK?

They are usually worth it if you export a lot of your solar during the day and use most of your electricity in the evening, or if you are on a time-of-use tariff with a cheap overnight rate. They are less worthwhile if you are at home using power all day, or if the battery would be oversized for your usage. We will tell you honestly which group you fall into before you spend anything.

What size solar battery do I need?

It depends on how much electricity you use between late afternoon and the next morning, not on the size of your roof. We look at your bills or smart meter data and your solar generation, then size the battery so it fills up on a typical day and empties overnight. A battery that never fully charges or never fully empties is money that will not pay back.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Yes. A battery can be added to almost any existing solar PV system, whoever installed it. Depending on your current inverter, we either fit an AC-coupled battery alongside it or replace it with a hybrid inverter that runs both the panels and the battery.

Can I have a battery without solar panels?

Yes. A battery can charge overnight on a cheap off-peak tariff and power your home during the more expensive daytime and evening hours. If you add solar later, the same battery will store your solar generation too.

Will a solar battery work in a power cut?

Only if it is designed for it. Most batteries switch off during a power cut for safety unless they have a backup function, often called EPS, and the backed-up circuits are wired separately. If keeping lights, a fridge or internet running matters to you, tell us at the survey and we will specify a system with backup.

How long do solar batteries last?

Most home batteries come with a warranty of around 10 years or a set number of charge cycles. Lithium batteries lose capacity slowly over time rather than failing suddenly, so a battery usually still holds a useful amount of its original capacity when the warranty ends.

Where will the battery be installed?

We follow the PAS 63100 safety guidance for home batteries. Where possible the battery goes outside the living space, for example in a garage, outbuilding or on an outside wall. If it has to go indoors, it is kept away from bedrooms and escape routes such as hallways and stairs, with fire detection where required.

Does a battery affect my Smart Export Guarantee payments?

You will export less, so your export payments go down. That is expected, because every unit you store and use yourself replaces electricity you would otherwise buy at full price. A properly installed and certified system keeps your solar eligible for the Smart Export Guarantee.

Are you MCS certified for battery storage?

Yes. MARA Electrical is MCS certified and NICEIC approved, based in Queensferry on Deeside. Every battery installation is tested and certified to BS 7671, and we handle the DNO notification for you.
