How much does home EV charger installation cost?
It depends on the charger you choose, the state of your consumer unit and how far the cable has to run. A standard 7kW installation on a modern supply is a straightforward job, and the £500 OZEV grant comes off the total if you're eligible. We give you a fixed written price after a free survey — no day-of surprises.
Can I claim the £500 OZEV grant for a home charger?
Possibly — the EV Chargepoint Grant is worth up to £500 per socket from April 2026 and is aimed at renters, flat owners and landlords with off-street parking. As an OZEV approved installer we confirm your eligibility on the survey and submit the whole claim for you, deducting it from your invoice.
Do I need a 7kW or a 22kW charger at home?
Almost certainly 7kW. A 22kW charger needs a three-phase supply, which very few UK homes have, and most cars can't accept 22kW AC anyway. A 7kW smart charger adds roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour and fully charges overnight on a cheap tariff. We check your supply on the survey and tell you honestly.
How long does the installation take?
A typical home EV charger installation takes about 3 to 4 hours, and your power is only off briefly while we work on the consumer unit. If your property needs an earthing upgrade or a longer cable run we'll tell you at survey stage so there are no surprises on the day.
Which home charger is best — Zappi or Pod Point?
If you have solar panels, a Zappi — it diverts surplus solar into your car so those miles are free. If you want something simple and discreet that just charges on a cheap overnight rate, Pod Point is excellent. We're independent installers of both, plus Autel, so we recommend on merit rather than commission.
Can I charge my car from my solar panels?
Yes. With a solar-compatible smart charger such as a Zappi, surplus generation that would otherwise be exported goes into your car instead — self-consumption rather than export. As MCS certified solar installers and an OZEV approved EV charger installer, we can design and fit both together.
